Siege of Toulon
Republican troops besieged Toulon, which the royalists had handed over to an Anglo-Spanish fleet, and recovered the main base of the French navy in the Mediterranean. It was here that the artillery officer Napoleon Bonaparte first distinguished himself.

Bonaparte insisted on seizing the heights that commanded the anchorage and directed the batteries himself. When the republicans took Fort Mulgrave on the night of 17–18 December, the allied fleet could no longer hold its anchorage, and the allies evacuated by sea, managing to burn part of the French fleet before they left. On 22 December Bonaparte was promoted to brigadier general.
