The monarchy in France fell in August 1792, a republic was proclaimed in September, and in January 1793 the Convention sentenced the former king to death. For some the execution marked a final break with centuries of monarchy; for others it became a symbol of revolutionary violence.

France was soon at war with Great Britain and Spain, and nine months later Queen Marie Antoinette was executed on the same square.
