Abu Bakr
One of Muhammad’s earliest followers and closest companions, and his father-in-law, who shared his emigration to Medina in 622. Chosen as the first caliph on Muhammad’s death (632–634), he subdued the rebel tribes of Arabia in the Ridda wars and sent the first Arab armies against Iraq and Syria.
