Umar ibn al-Khattab
Companion and father-in-law of Muhammad and the second caliph (634–644), the first to take the title “Commander of the Faithful”. Under him the Arabs conquered Syria, Iraq, Egypt and much of Iran; he settled the armies in garrison cities such as Basra, Kufa and Fustat and introduced the Hijri calendar. He was assassinated in Medina by a Persian slave, Abu Lu'lu'a.
