Khalid ibn al-Walid
Meccan commander of the Makhzum clan who fought against Muhammad at Uhud, embraced Islam in 627 or 629 and became the most celebrated general of the early conquests, called the “Sword of God”: he led campaigns in the Ridda wars, in Iraq (633) and in Syria, where he won the battle of the Yarmuk. Caliph Umar removed him from supreme command.
