Al-Mutanabbi
Abu al-Tayyib Ahmad ibn al-Husayn al-Mutanabbi of Kufa, regarded as one of the greatest Arabic poets. In his youth he led a revolt in Syria (932) in which, by the accounts, he claimed to be a prophet — hence his nickname, ‘the would-be prophet’ — and was imprisoned. From 948 to 957 he was the court poet of Sayf al-Dawla at Aleppo; he then served Kafur in Egypt, left for Iraq around 960 and was killed in an attack on the road in Iraq in 965.
