Sayf al-Dawla
Ali ibn Abdallah ibn Hamdan, the most famous of the Hamdanids, founder of the emirate of Aleppo (944–967), which covered northern Syria and part of the Jazira. For two decades he fought the resurgent Byzantine Empire, winning renown as a champion of Islam despite heavy defeats, and his brilliant court, with the poet al-Mutanabbi, made him a model of the chivalrous Arab prince.
