Alp-Tegin
Turkish military slave (ghulam) of the Samanids who rose to command the royal guard under Nuh I and the army of Khurasan under Abd al-Malik I. After his attempt to place his own candidate on the throne failed in 961, he withdrew south of the Hindu Kush and in 962 seized Ghazni, which he held as a nominal Samanid governor until his death in 963; his former slave Sabuktigin later founded the Ghaznavid dynasty there.
