Ghaznavids
Persianate Sunni dynasty of Turkic origin that ruled from Ghazni — in its last decades from Lahore — until 1186. Its founder Sabuktigin, a former slave and son-in-law of Alp-Tegin (the Samanid general who had seized Ghazni in 962), was chosen ruler by the Turkish garrison of Ghazni in 977; under Mahmud of Ghazni the empire stretched from the Oxus to the Indus and raided deep into India, before losing its western lands to the Seljuks (1040).
