Person
Sabuktigin
Abu Mansur Sabuktigin, founder of the Ghaznavid dynasty and ruler of Ghazni from 977 to 997. A Turk, probably from Barskhan by Lake Issyk-Kul, he was captured in a raid and sold as a slave, came into the service of Alp-Tegin and followed him to Ghazni, where the Turkish troops chose him as their leader in 977. Nominally a Samanid governor, he extended his rule over eastern Afghanistan, twice defeated the Hindu Shahi king Jayapala and fought for the Samanids in Khurasan; his son Mahmud built the Ghaznavid empire.
