Caracol
Maya city in the Cayo District of western Belize, whose ancient name, as epigraphers read it, was Uxwitza’. A client of Tikal until the mid-6th century, it grew into one of the largest Classic Maya cities after Tikal’s defeat in 562; its last dated monument is of 859.
