Kaanul (Snake) kingdom
Classic Maya kingdom of the Kaanul or ‘Snake’ dynasty, ruled in the 6th century from Dzibanche in southern Quintana Roo and from the 7th century from Calakmul. Tikal’s great rival, it became the leading power of the lowlands after Tikal’s defeat in 562.
