Chahamanas of Shakambhari (Chauhans)
Indian dynasty, the Chahamanas or Chauhans, that ruled the Sapadalaksha country in present-day Rajasthan from Shakambhari (Sambhar) and, from the 12th century, from Ajmer, a city founded or greatly enlarged by Ajayaraja II. Its earliest historical king lived in the 6th century; under Vigraharaja IV in the mid-12th century its rule reached Delhi and Haryana. After Prithviraja III was defeated at Tarain in 1192 the Ghurids installed his son as their vassal, and Chahamana rule at Ajmer ended about 1194, though a branch of the dynasty held Ranthambhor.
