Person1162–1192
Prithviraja III (Prithviraj Chauhan)
Chahamana king of Sapadalaksha with its capital at Ajmer (reigned 1177–1192), remembered in legend as Prithviraj Chauhan. He came to the throne as a minor under the regency of his mother Karpuradevi; inscriptions of his reign at Madanpur claim that he laid waste the Chandella kingdom of Jejakabhukti in 1182–1183. In 1191 he defeated Muhammad of Ghor at Tarain, but on the same field the next year he was routed, captured and later put to death. His court poet Jayanaka celebrated him in the Prithviraja Vijaya, and the much later Prithviraj Raso made him the hero of a romantic epic.
