Jasaw Chan Kʼawiil I

King of Tikal from 682, son of Nuun Ujol Chaak. He ended Tikal’s long eclipse by defeating Yuknoom Yichʼaak Kʼahkʼ of Calakmul in 695 and began the building programme of Late Classic Tikal; he was buried beneath Temple I, where his tomb, Burial 116, was found in 1962.
