John the Fearless
Eldest son of Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, and himself duke from 1404 to 1419. As Count of Nevers he was the nominal commander of the French crusaders at Nicopolis in 1396, where he was captured and later ransomed; his bravery there earned him the name “the Fearless”. As duke he had his rival Louis of Orléans murdered, setting off the Armagnac–Burgundian civil war, and was himself assassinated in 1419.
