Kubrat
Ruler of the Onogundur Bulgars in the mid-7th century — Koubratos and Krobatos in the Byzantine sources, usually identified with Kurt of the Dulo clan in the Bulgarian Princes’ List. Between 634 and 640 he threw off Avar rule and allied himself with Heraclius, who made him a patrician; Byzantine writers called his union old Great Bulgaria. He died under Constans II (641–668), probably around 660–665, and his sons, among them Asparuh, divided his people.
