Old Great Bulgaria
Union of Bulgar tribes led by Kubrat in the steppes between the Sea of Azov and the Kuban in the mid-7th century, the “old Great Bulgaria” of Theophanes and Nikephoros. After Kubrat’s death it broke up under Khazar pressure: his eldest son Batbayan became a Khazar tributary, Asparuh led his horde to the Danube, and other groups went to Pannonia, to Italy and, some historians think, to the Middle Volga.
