Kūkai
Japanese monk, founder of the Shingon school of esoteric Buddhism, known posthumously as Kōbō Daishi. In Chang’an in 805 he was initiated by the master Huiguo, and in 806 he returned to Japan with scriptures, mandalas and ritual implements. He founded the monastic centre on Mount Kōya (816), received the state temple Tō-ji in Heian-kyō (823) and was celebrated as one of the great calligraphers of his age.
