Saichō
Japanese monk, founder of the Tendai school, known posthumously as Dengyō Daishi. Ordained at Tōdai-ji in 785, he founded a hermitage on Mount Hiei, studied the Tiantai teachings in China in 804–805 and in 806 won court recognition for his school; his Mahayana ordination platform on Mount Hiei was approved seven days after his death.
