Mai Thúc Loan
Leader of a rising against the Tang in Annam (northern Vietnam), called Mai Xuancheng, Mai Shuluan or Mai Shuyan in the Chinese histories. He proclaimed himself the Black Emperor — Mai Hắc Đế in Vietnamese tradition — allied with Linyi and Chenla and took the seat of the protectorate, but in 722 the Tang general Yang Sixu crushed the revolt. In Vietnam he is honoured as a national hero.
