Minamoto clan (Genji)
Japanese noble lineages descended from emperors whose sons were given the surname Minamoto and removed from the imperial family, first by Emperor Saga in 814. Their leading warrior branch, the Seiwa Genji, lost out to the Taira in the Hōgen and Heiji disturbances, but in 1180–1185 Minamoto no Yoritomo led it to victory in the Genpei War and founded the Kamakura shogunate.
