Taira clan (Heike)
Japanese warrior clan descended from emperors whose offspring were given the surname Taira and reduced to subject status, first in 825. Its Ise branch rose in the service of the cloistered emperors, and Taira no Kiyomori, victor in the Hōgen and Heiji disturbances, dominated the court from the 1160s; the clan was destroyed by the Minamoto in the Genpei War, which ended at Dan-no-ura in 1185.
