Minamoto no Yoritomo

Japanese warrior leader, founder of the Kamakura shogunate. A son of Minamoto no Yoshitomo, he was exiled to Izu as a boy after the Heiji disturbance (1159–1160); in 1180 he rose against the Taira, made Kamakura his base and directed the Minamoto victory in the Genpei War, building up a warrior government in the east. In 1192 the court appointed him sei-i taishōgun; he died in 1199.
