Muhammad ibn al-Qasim
Arab commander of the Thaqif tribe of Ta’if, a young kinsman of al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf, the Umayyad viceroy of Iraq (the son of his first cousin, often called his nephew). Sent by al-Hajjaj while still in his teens, he conquered Sind and the southern Punjab in 711–713, from Debal to Multan. After the deaths of al-Hajjaj and al-Walid I the new caliph Sulayman recalled him, and in 715 he died in custody — according to al-Baladhuri, under torture.
