Al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf
Umayyad governor from the Thaqif tribe of Ta'if. He took Mecca from the rival caliph Ibn al-Zubayr in 692 and from 694 until his death ruled Iraq and the east of the caliphate as viceroy of Abd al-Malik and al-Walid I. He crushed the revolt of Ibn al-Ash'ath (701), founded Wasit, introduced Islamic coinage in Iraq and Arabic in its tax registers, and chose and equipped the armies that conquered Transoxiana under Qutayba ibn Muslim and Sind under his kinsman Muhammad ibn al-Qasim.
