Al-Walid I
Sixth Umayyad caliph (705–715), son of Abd al-Malik. Under him the caliphate reached its greatest extent: armies sent by his viceroy al-Hajjaj conquered Transoxiana and Sind, and those of Musa ibn Nusayr conquered Hispania. The spoils paid for the Great Mosque of Damascus and other buildings.
