Murad I

Ottoman ruler from 1362 to 1389, the son of Orhan. He conquered Adrianople (Edirne), which became the Ottoman capital, extended Ottoman rule over much of the Balkans — his commander Lala Şahin Pasha crushed the Serbian lords at the Maritsa in 1371 — made the Serbian princes, the Bulgarian tsar and the Byzantine emperor John V pay him tribute, and divided his realm into the provinces of Anatolia and Rumelia. He was killed at the battle of Kosovo, the only Ottoman sultan to die in battle.
