Nagabhata I
Founder of the imperial line of the Gurjara-Pratiharas, who ruled in about 730–760 — from Avanti (Ujjain) in the view of R. C. Majumdar, from Jalor in that of Dasharatha Sharma. The Gwalior inscription of Mihira Bhoja, a later king of his dynasty (descended from his nephew Devaraja), written in the 9th century, says that he crushed the army of a mleccha (barbarian) king, usually identified with the Arabs of Sind. Rashtrakuta records later boasted that the ‘lord of the Gurjaras’ — perhaps Nagabhata himself or his successor — served as door-keeper at Dantidurga’s ceremony in Ujjain.
