Nur ad-Din
Nur ad-Din Mahmud, son of Zengi, Zengid ruler of Aleppo from 1146 and of Damascus from 1154, called al-Malik al-Adil, 'the Just King'. He united Muslim Syria, led the Muslim counter-offensive against the crusader states, founded madrasas and hospitals and sent his general Shirkuh, with Shirkuh's nephew Saladin, to conquer Fatimid Egypt; he died in 1174 while preparing to march against Saladin.
