Palenque (kingdom of Baakal)
Maya city in the foothills of northern Chiapas, Mexico, called Lakamha’ in antiquity and the seat of the kingdom of Baakal, whose first known king ruled from 431. It reached its height in the 7th century under Kʼinich Janaab Pakal and his sons, whose palace, temples and inscriptions are among the finest of the Classic Maya; no new elite buildings were raised there after about 800.
