Qutayba ibn Muslim
Arab commander of the Bahila tribe from Basra, a protégé of al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf, who governed Khurasan for the Umayyads from 705 to 715. Campaigning beyond the Oxus almost every year, he took Bukhara, Khwarazm and Samarkand and led the caliphate’s armies to the Jaxartes and Ferghana; after the death of al-Walid I he rebelled against the new caliph Sulayman and was killed by his own troops.
