Second Turkic Khaganate
Khaganate of the Turks restored in 682 by Qutlugh (Ilterish Qaghan) and his counsellor Tonyukuk after half a century of Tang rule, with its centre at Ötüken in the Orkhon valley. Under Qapaghan and Bilge Qaghan it dominated the Mongolian steppe, and its memorial stelae carry the Old Turkic runic inscriptions of the Orkhon. It was destroyed in 744 by the Uyghurs and their allies.
