Teotihuacan
The largest city of the pre-Columbian Americas, in a side valley of the Valley of Mexico some 40 km northeast of modern Mexico City, and the centre of a civilization whose influence reached the Maya lands. Its original name is unknown — Maya texts call it Puh, “Place of Reeds” — and so is its form of government: no royal palaces or dynastic monuments have been found. Its centre was burned around 550 or in the 7th century, and by the mid-8th century the city was deserted.
