Yenisei Kyrgyz

Turkic-speaking people of the upper Yenisei and the Minusinsk Basin, called Jiankun, Jiegu and later Xiajiasi in the Chinese histories, which call their ruler the A-re (ajo); the rulers claimed descent from the Han general Li Ling. Subdued by the Uyghurs in 758, they fought them for more than twenty years and in 840 destroyed the Uyghur Khaganate. The Tang recognised their ruler as khagan in 847, but the Kyrgyz did not keep a lasting hold on the Mongolian steppe.
