Zemarchus
Byzantine commander from Cilicia, whom Menander calls general of the eastern cities; in August 569 Justin II sent him as envoy to the Turkic ruler Dizabul (Istämi). Menander preserved the account of his journey: purification rites in Sogdiana, the khagan’s silk-hung tents with a golden throne and a couch on golden peacocks at the “Golden Mountain” Ektag, a meeting with Persian envoys at Talas and the return north of the Caspian and through the land of the Alans.
