Annexation of the Astrakhan Khanate

Streltsy and Volga Cossacks took Astrakhan almost without a fight; the khanate was finally incorporated into the Russian state, and the entire course of the Volga came under Moscow’s rule.

As early as 1554 a Russian army had installed a dependent khan, Dervish Ali, in Astrakhan, but in 1556 he began to seek an alliance with Crimea. During the second campaign the Cossacks of Lyapun Filimonov were the first to reach the city, and on 26 August 1556 they seized it in a surprise attack; the khan fled.
