Altan Khan’s raid on Beijing
The Mongol ruler Altan Khan broke through gaps in the Great Wall, advanced on Beijing and plundered its suburbs.

Altan Khan sought the right to trade with the Ming Empire, exchanging horses for grain and cloth, but the court rejected his embassies, and time and again he responded with raids. He did not attempt to storm Beijing itself. After the raid the southern suburbs of the capital, with the Temple of Heaven, were enclosed by a new wall, creating the “Outer City”. Peace and trade with the Ming were established only in the early 1570s.
