Battle of Cajamarca
Francisco Pizarro’s small force made a surprise attack on the retinue of the Inca ruler Atahualpa in the square of Cajamarca, killed thousands of unarmed people and took Atahualpa prisoner.

Atahualpa, who had just prevailed over his brother Huáscar in a civil war, came to Cajamarca at the invitation of the Spaniards, seeing no threat in a band of 180 men. The capture of the ruler paralyzed the government of the empire and opened the way to its conquest; the Spaniards executed Atahualpa in 1533. The date is given in the Julian calendar, which the Spaniards used.
