The city was surrounded on 23 August 1552. The besiegers built two lines of siege works and mobile towers and dug mines under the walls; on 2 October, after a mine was exploded, the decisive assault began. The capture of Kazan opened the Volga route to Russia and prepared the way for the subjugation of Astrakhan; St. Basil’s Cathedral was built in Moscow to commemorate the victory.
