Đại Việt crushes Champa: the fall of Vijaya
The army and navy of the Vietnamese emperor Lê Thánh Tông invaded Champa, took its capital Vijaya after a siege of several days and captured the king; the Cham state never recovered from the blow.

According to Vietnamese sources, the pretext for the war was a Cham attack on a border garrison in 1470. Lê Thánh Tông, who had spent years preparing the campaign, personally led a fleet and a land army south; following the Ming model, these forces included units armed with firearms. Landing near Hội An, the Vietnamese advanced from the sea, from the north and across the mountains, and in March 1471 they surrounded Vijaya; after four days of bombardment and assault the city fell. King Trà Toàn and his family, along with tens of thousands of captives, were carried off to the north, and many thousands of people were killed.
The northern lands of Champa became the Vietnamese province of Quảng Nam, and the border moved south to the Cù Mông Pass; further south only dependent Cham principalities survived, above all Panduranga. Some of the Cham nobility fled to Cambodia, to Malacca and to the islands of the Malay Archipelago. The dates are given only to the month because the Vietnamese chronicles reckon time by the lunar calendar.
