Capture of Malacca
Afonso de Albuquerque’s fleet captured Malacca, the main hub of the Asian spice trade and capital of the sultanate that controlled the strait between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea.

The Portuguese arrived off the city on 1 July 1511. The first assault, on 25 July, was repulsed, but a renewed attack in August brought victory; the sources give different dates for the final capture: 10, 15 or 24 August. Albuquerque built the fortress of A Famosa, and Malacca became the base of Portuguese trade with the Moluccas, China and later Japan. One of the captains of the expedition was Ferdinand Magellan.
