Ōnin War
A dispute over the succession to the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa grew into a ten-year war between two coalitions of daimyo, fought mainly in the capital, Kyoto, itself.

The Eastern Army was led by Hosokawa Katsumoto and the Western Army by Yamana Sōzen; both died in 1473, but the war went on without a decisive outcome. Afterwards the power of the Ashikaga shoguns became nominal, and Japan entered the Sengoku, or “Warring States”, period, which lasted more than a century.
