Reign of Pachacuti — birth of the Inca Empire
The Sapa Inca Pachacuti turned a small state centered on Cusco into Tawantinsuyu, the Inca Empire, conquering the lands from Lake Titicaca to the Junín valley.

According to Inca tradition, his reign began with a victory over the Chanka, who had laid siege to Cusco; this war was seen as an “overturning of the world” (pachakuti), hence the ruler’s throne name. Under Pachacuti the Coricancha (Temple of the Sun), roads, terraces and irrigation canals were built, and conquered peoples were resettled en masse in distant regions of the empire.
The regnal dates 1438–1471 are the conventional chronology of John H. Rowe, based on the chronicle of Cabello de Balboa; radiocarbon dates suggest that the expansion may have begun earlier.
