The Galician–Volhynian Chronicle was originally written without dates; the years were inserted later by a copyist, and in the Hypatian Codex the fire of Kholm stands under 1259. Mykhailo Hrushevsky dated it to 1255 and Leonid Makhnovets to November 1257, but the date generally accepted is early spring 1256, which is also given as the year of the city’s founding.
When the town was founded is uncertain. Tradition credits Daniel with founding it; historians have also proposed earlier dates, from 1240 to about 1250, and some attribute the founding to Lev himself. In 1259–1261 its fortifications were razed at the demand of the Mongol commander Burundai. After Daniel’s death Lev rebuilt the town around 1270 and made it his residence and the capital of Galicia–Volhynia; a mention of it as the capital dates from 1272.
