The fleet sailed from Aigues-Mortes in 1248 and wintered in Cyprus; on 6 June 1249 the crusaders took Damietta almost without a fight. The advance on Cairo stalled at al-Mansurah; during the retreat the army was destroyed at Fariskur, and the king was taken prisoner and released in return for a huge ransom and the surrender of Damietta. Until 1254 Louis, based at Acre, strengthened the crusaders’ coastal towns, and then returned to France.
