Mongol census of Rus’
Mongol census-takers (“chislenniki”) counted the population of northeastern Rus’ for tribute and military levies: the lands of Suzdal, Ryazan and Murom in 1257, Vladimir in 1258 and Novgorod in 1259.

The census was carried out on the orders of the central government of the Mongol Empire and entrenched the system of regular tribute, the Horde’s “vykhod”. In Novgorod it provoked unrest; in 1259 Alexander Nevsky brought troops into the city and forced the Novgorodians to submit to the Horde’s census-takers.
