Hulagu’s campaign in the Middle East was undertaken on the orders of the great khan Möngke. After routing the caliph’s army, the Mongols and their allies besieged Baghdad, and on 10 February 1258 the caliph surrendered. Massacre and plunder followed; the city’s libraries, including the House of Wisdom, were destroyed.

The destruction of Baghdad, the seat of the caliphs for almost five centuries, is regarded as the end of the Islamic Golden Age, and it opened the way to Syria for the Mongols.
