War of 1812
A war of the United States against Great Britain and its Native American allies, begun over British restrictions on trade with Napoleonic France and the impressment of American sailors. It ended with the Treaty of Ghent, which restored the prewar borders.

The United States declared war on 18 June 1812, six days before Napoleon invaded Russia. American attempts to conquer Canada failed; in August 1814 the British captured and burned Washington but were repulsed at Baltimore and Plattsburgh.
Peace was signed at Ghent in December 1814, but news of it came too late to prevent the British defeat at New Orleans in January 1815; officially the war ended with the ratification of the treaty in Washington on 17 February 1815. Americans called it the “second war of independence”.
