Cry of Dolores
The parish priest Miguel Hidalgo rang the church bell to summon his parishioners in the small town of Dolores and called on them to rise against the Spanish authorities, starting the Mexican War of Independence (1810–1821).

The rising of Hidalgo and his supporters began against the background of the crisis of the Spanish monarchy caused by Napoleon’s invasion of Spain. The insurgent army grew rapidly, but in 1811 Hidalgo was captured and executed; the war ended with Mexico’s independence in 1821.
Every year, on the eve of Independence Day, the President of Mexico repeats the “cry” from the balcony of the National Palace, ringing the same bell.
